California Railroad Museum

My first destination after leaving Forest Ranch was the California Railroad Museum in Sacramento.  They have a big collection of locomotives & cars under one roof.  Not surprisingly, the main hall starts with the story of the Central Pacific then branches out to cover other aspects of railroading in the state.  They rigged one coach car to rock back and forth as you walk through.  The windows are blacked-out & the lights dimmed so it feels like you're truly riding the rails.  The film was forgettable.  They seemed most interested in mentioning as many minority groups as possible.

The museum anchors the northend of Old Town Sacramento, a district designed to recreate the early days of the city.  I walked through the reconstruction of the hardware store where the Big Four incorporated the Central Pacific, and also walked a little ways down the river before returning to the car.
