Sutters Fort

Prior to the gold rush, Swiss immigrant John Sutter was the most important person in California.  His base of operations was a fort that, surpringly, remains intact not far from Central Sacramento.  From this outpost, he sent relief supplies to members of the Donner Party.   His need for lumber prompted the construction of a saw mill up in the Sierra foothills and the subsequent discovery of gold there.  He wasn't able to capitalize on the gold rush.  Ironically, it deprived him of the precious labor he needed to run his fort.
