Approximately halfway between LA & San Francisco, Hearst Castle is the popular name for William Randolph Hearst's Estate. The publishing magnate started building the 165,000 square foot mansion in 1919 on inherited land. He never finished it.
I took the general tour through the living room, dining room, & theater. The grounds contain three guest houses set among immaculate gardens. Each is as large as a good size house house. The Neptune Pool is probably the most picturesque feature. Hearst purchased columns dating from late Roman Empire to use to complete it.
